About us

We believe in the individuality of all people and exist to create opportunities for those who have intellectual disability.

  • Our Vision:  An engaged community creating opportunity for people with intellectual disability. (May 2014).

  • Our Mission:   To create and facilitate opportunities for people with intellectual disability. (April 2014)

Summer Street offers a range of programs including Vocational Training, Personal Development, Wellness, Literacy, and Employment. We partner with people with intellectual disability, those closest to them and the community to create opportunity and improve quality of life.

Founded in 1968 as the Parkdale Activity Centre, Summer Street is a registered charity dedicated to helping individuals in Pictou County, Nova Scotia with intellectual disability. Our Society (incorporated in 1985) and Foundation (incorporated in 1990) are governed by separate, independent, voluntary Board of Directors.

Summer Street is continuously growing and evolving to meet changing and increasing client needs with the best available options. In 1990 we were working at capacity with 45 clients and 40 others waiting for services. Today we provide services to 185 people.

The Foundation is responsible for fundraising and the financial management of donations to Summer Street.
